Senior Support Worker, Sue

Sue is a Senior Support Worker at a Plymouth-based organisation, providing support to people with learning disabilities and other needs. Find out more about her role and why she decided to start working in care.

I knew I wanted to give something back.

Sue joined the care workforce six years ago after being inspired by her son:

“I have a son with disabilities, and I knew I wanted to give something back which led me to starting my career in care.”

Since joining the sector, Sue has progressed her career, being promoted to a Senior Support Worker and completing her Level 2 and Level 3 in Health and Social Care.

Sue’s role

Sue works with an individual with learning disabilities, helping her with day-to-day activities in the home and enabling her to get out and about and live the life she wants to. They recently took a trip to London and challenged themselves to brave great heights:

“We were determined to go on the London Eye but the lady I help was quite nervous. We took it slowly with lots of encouragement and she loved it. She was absolutely delighted afterwards and understandably felt so proud of what she’d achieved. I actually have a fear of heights, so it was a challenge for me too!”

The person Sue supports volunteers at a local community café. This activity is supported by Sue and her team and has helped the person increase her confidence and meet new people.

I get so much satisfaction in my role.

“I get so much satisfaction in my role, both from my work with those people I support, helping them to achieve, but also from helping and supporting team members as they progress their care careers.”
